Is it effective to melt the chocolate to make chocolate frosting?

I usually add cocoa Hershey to make chocolate, but I’m out. I have some dark chocolate chips (about 1/2 cup) had to melt and add the vanilla before work Thanks Best answer:

you need to do is thick but smooth.
