Question by autumnrachellstarr: looking for a dark chocolate cake and frosting recipe?
it’s my husband’s bday and i want to make him a cake. he’s at work and i can’t go to the store so i’ll have to hope i already have all of the ingredients. i don’t have shortening though. and i don’t have any icing to draw or write on the cake so i’m also seeking a recipe for that, so i can put it in a ziplock bag and use that to decorate with. i usually make the dark chocolate cake recipe on the hershey’s cocoa container(which is the best ever with 1c hot coffee instead of 1c boiling water) but the icing recipe on it isn’t thick enough(or at least, i don’t know how to make it thick enough) so if you know of any recipes and tips and tricks to help with this, its much appreciated!
so i’ve definitely decided to use the hershey’s chocolate cake but now seeking a good frosting recipe and icing recipe to write happy bday with

Since you don’t have shortening you will have to use butter or margarine in the frosting. Set it out at room temperature to soften completely before you make the frosting. You’ll need 3/4 c. butter or margarine, 1 tsp. vanilla, 3 – 4 Tbsp. water or milk and a 2 lb. bag of confectioners sugar. You may need to add more water if it seems too thick. Mix it on low until combined and then mix on medium for about 3 minutes. You can ice the cake with it and then color some to do your writing/decorating.
